The Animals
The Science
The Alternatives
Animals are not good models of humans.
They provide unreliable results and do not advance medical science. It wastes time and money.
For example: monkeys (our closest relative) do not develop AIDS when injected with HIV. Huge amounts of money, for many years, have been spent on trying to make monkeys get AIDS. This money could have been better spent on actually trying to find a cure.
There is growing unrest in the scientific community. Many scientists now agree that animal testing is flawed. A report published in the British Medical Journal in February 2004 found evidence that "seriously undermined the principle that animal experiments are necessary to inform human medicine".
Multiple reports have concluded that the search for a cure for cancer and MS has been significantly slowed because of animal testing. It has been concluded that cancer in mice and rats in not the same as cancer in humans and is not an accurate model for testing.
The alternatives are better. They are faster, cheaper and more efficient. But most of all: they provide better results and will make science advance faster.
